Weather alert: UAE to see rain, rough seas as cold air mass moves in
NCM forecasts showers and strong winds from 4 to 5 March
DUBAI – A surface low-pressure extension combined with an upper-level trough and a cold air mass is set to influence weather conditions across the UAE next week.
The forecast, issued on Thursday by the National Centre of Meteorology, outlines a two-day spell of unsettled conditions from Wednesday, 4 March, to Thursday, 5 March 2026.
The developing system is expected to bring a shift in temperatures, changing winds and rainfall across various parts of the country. Authorities have indicated that the impact will be felt progressively, with marine conditions also deteriorating during the period.
Rain outlook
According to the NCM, various cloud formations will build up over the country as the system advances. These clouds are expected to produce rainfall over scattered areas, with intensity ranging from light to moderate.
At times, rainfall may turn heavy over some northern and eastern regions. The distribution of showers is forecast to vary, with certain areas experiencing more concentrated precipitation while others receive intermittent rain.
The unstable conditions stem from the interaction between the surface low-pressure system and the upper-level trough, reinforced by the arrival of a cold air mass. Such combinations typically enhance cloud development and increase the likelihood of rainfall, particularly over elevated and coastal northern zones.
Winds shift
Wind patterns are also forecast to change noticeably during the period. Southeasterly winds will prevail initially before shifting to northwesterly as the system progresses. Speeds are expected to range from moderate to fresh at times.
The strengthening winds may lead to blowing dust in exposed areas, reducing horizontal visibility intermittently. The wind shift, coupled with the incoming cold air mass, will contribute to a drop in temperatures across the country.
The decline in temperatures is anticipated to be most apparent during the latter part of the forecast period, particularly on Thursday, as northwesterly winds usher in cooler air. Residents may notice a marked difference compared with conditions earlier in the week.
Sea conditions
Marine conditions are forecast to deteriorate gradually, especially in the Arabian Gulf. From Tuesday night through Thursday, sea conditions in the Arabian Gulf are expected to become rough.
In the Oman Sea, waves will initially be slight to moderate before becoming rough at times. The change in sea state is linked to strengthening winds associated with the passing system.
